Wong Kun-oi, kaifong (local residents) calls him Uncle Sai. He has been holding the baton of the annual Hungry Ghost ceremony for 22 years, and also a core member of the 30 Houses. The 30 Houses may sound unfamiliar nowadays, it is the name of the area roughly overlaps the present day Soho (south of Hollywood Road) in Central. For the annual ceremony to take place, the 30 House community has to overcome challenges brought to them by urbanization and redevelopment. The documentary features how Uncle Sai put together the ceremony and maintain a disappearing community.
Urban Diary – Sau-ping: Storyteller
Hong Kong /2013/Col /in Cantonese with Chinese and English subtitles/16 mins
Wong Sau-ping is a seelai (middle-aged housewife) and a storyteller. This story-telling seelai often jokes that she hardly ventured beyond Stone Nullah Lane and Queen's Road East in the first 30 years of her life. Because her life and living have been closely-knitted with Wan Chai, she uses her experience and the myths she has gathered over the years to give the younger generation an idea of what life was like in Wan Chai in previous decades.
